According to the initial reports, the investigation is indicating the involvement of Israeli and Colombian criminals who committed an act of revenge over a claimed "betrayal" by the victim. It is thought that Shushan was murdered because he provided secret information to the Colombian government about the operations and possibly criminals he was involved with.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry has issued a statement saying they learned about the incident and have contacted the victim's family in Israel to provide aid and help bring his body to Israel for his funerals and burial.
