Boko Haram leader is dead: What you need to know

  • The Islamic State West African Sovereign Terrorist group said on Sunday that Abu Bakar Shekau, the leader of rival Nigerian militant Islamic group Boko Haram, has died.

  • According to Reuters, the audio of ISWAP leader Abu Musab Albarnawi confirmed his death. It is reported that he died detonating an explosive on himself after a battle between two groups.

  • Nigeria intelligence reports also said Shekau is dead. Nigerian political analysts have said that Shekau's death could mark the end of the violent rivalry between the two groups.

  • Neither Boko Haram nor the Nigerian Government has confirmed his death as he has been reported dead numerous times before only to resurface.

  • Shekau killed more than 30000 people through Boko Haram in 2009 and forced nearly 2 million people to flee their homes.
