Facebook-Australia deal: What you need to know

Facebook on Tuesday, February 23rd, lifted its ban on news from its platform in Australia. The move came after a deal was reached between the tech giant and the government over the new legislation introduced by the government to curb the bargaining power of Facebook and Google. The compromise included giving Facebook one month's notice before the tech giant comes under the code of the law. This will help them to get some time to figure out the agreements with the parties. This is a huge win for the Australian government considering every government across the globe was watching the situation before bringing similar legislation in their respective jurisdictions. "We're restoring news on Facebook in Australia in the coming days. Going forward, the government has clarified we will retain the ability to decide if news appears on Facebook so that we won't automatically be subject to a forced negotiation,” Campbell Brown, Facebook's vice-president for news partnerships.
