Indian Government opposes same-sex marriage: What you need to know

Narendra Modi led, the Indian government recently told the country’s High Court that same-sex couples “cannot claim a fundamental right for same-sex marriage”. This comes after a same-sex couple, Kavita Arora and Ankita Khanna filed a plea seeking registration of marriage after a government official refused to solemnize their marriage. “Living together as partners and having a sexual relationship by a same-sex individual is not comparable with Indian family unit concept of a husband, wife & children which necessarily presuppose a biological man as ‘husband’, a biological woman as ‘wife’ and children born out of the union,” the government said.
