Indian variant COVID virus rises in the UK: What you need to know

  • The Indian variant of the Covid-19 virus, known as ‘Delta’ is now the dominant variant in the UK.

  • The cases associated with this variant rose 79% over the past week, taking the total count to 12,431. The variant has taken over the other variants, Kent and alpha.

  • Scientists believe that the chances of getting hospitalized are more with this virus. This study is based on early analysis and doctors say that more data is needed to get confirmation.

  • Dr. Jenny Harries, chief executive of the UK Health Security Agency, said in a segment, “With this variant now dominant across the UK, it remains vital that we all continue to exercise as much caution as possible. The way to tackle variants is to tackle the transmission of Covid-19 as a whole.”

  • North-west of England is the most affected area with this variant according to PHE officials.

  • In the UK, 65.7 million doses of covid vaccine have already been given with 39.1% of the population fully vaccinated.
