Iran nuclear deal: What you need to know

Former President Donald Trump has withdrawn the United States from a deal negotiated in 2015 by his predecessor President Barack Obama to limit Iranian ability to reach 90% of their uranium enrichment plan required to produce nuclear weapons. In 2020, Iran has ordered negotiations to begin with the UN-council members including the United States in an effort to return to the 2015 agreement, a.k.a Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA.
On February 22, 2021, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Iran might enrich uranium up to 60% purity if needed and that Iran would never surrender to US pressure over its nuclear program. This came as an effort to pressure newly elected President Joe Biden to reenter the deal first. Washington says Tehran must first return to full compliance.
