Italian ambassador, Luca Attanasio, and his security escort, Vittorio Lacovacci die in an attack on a United Nations convoy in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The attack happened on Monday, February 22, 2021, around 10.30 am local time. It was not clear who was behind the attempted kidnapping and heinous murder of three individuals.

At the moment of the attack, the Italian ambassador was in a vehicle along with his security agent and the driver, who died immediately when assailants stopped the convoy and fired shots. The other two individuals were announced dead at the Monusco base after suffering serious injuries.

The UN Secretary-General has strongly condemned the attack and has ordered authorities to swiftly open an intensive investigation of this "heinous targeting" of a UN mission.
