On Wednesday, a tragic shooting in Lewiston, Maine, claimed the lives of at least 10 people, and the number of casualties is expected to increase, as per two anonymous law enforcement officials who spoke to The Associated Press.
These officials also revealed that several individuals had been injured. Investigators were in the process of examining the crime scenes and collecting evidence. Law enforcement was actively searching for the individual responsible for opening fire at two separate locations in the city of Maine.
These officials were not allowed to discuss the ongoing investigation publicly and provided this information on the condition of anonymity.
The Lewiston Police had earlier posted on Facebook, alerting the public about an active shooter incident at Schemengees Bar and Grille and Sparetime Recreation, a bowling alley. They requested that people avoid using the roads to ensure that emergency responders could access the hospitals.
Central Maine Medical Center, on its website, confirmed that they were responding to a mass casualty event caused by a mass shooter and were coordinating with neighboring hospitals to accommodate patients.
Around 8 p.m., an alert was issued for Lewiston as the Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office reported two active shooter incidents under investigation. The suspect was reported to still be at large.
The sheriff's office urged all businesses to lock down or close during the investigation. A spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety advised residents to remain in their homes with their doors locked.
