Russian soldiers swam naked across river fleeing city of Kherson
According to reports, Russian soldiers ditched their weapons and gear and swam across the Dnipro River during Moscow’s retreat from the city of Kherson last week.
A video released by Ukraine’s defence ministry shows Ukrainian troops patrolling along a river bank, only to find it littered with the belongings of Russian soldiers, who appeared to have left all their equipment behind as they fled.
One Ukrainian soldier who was examining the pile of uniforms was heard saying, “Look, they ran away naked across the river.” Russian troops were ordered to retreat from Kherson to the western bank of the Dnipro on Thursday. The withdrawal that military experts believed would take days if not weeks was apparently complete in less than 24 hours.
The Ukrainian utilities said on Tuesday that the Russians deliberately destroyed a key source of power for the city and parts of a nearby region. The head of Ukraine’s power grid operator, Volodymyr Kudrytsky, said the Russian troops blew up a local substation before retreating, leaving it beyond repair.
In Russia, the defence ministry sought to boost morale by offering soldiers bonuses for taking out Ukrainian vehicles. The price tag for Ukrainian weapons vary: a soldier could get an equivalent of pounds 4,000 for shooting down a jet or pounds 700 for destroying an armoured vehicle.
