Sri Lanka to ban burqas: What you need to know

On Saturday, March 13th, Sri Lanka announced that they are proceeding with their decision to ban burqas along with closing more than 1000 Islamic schools. Minister of Public Security Sarath Weerasekara said, "The burqa has a direct impact on national security”. He said that wearing a burqa can be associated with extremist ideology. He also mentioned that he is going to ban more than 1000 Islamic schools as they are not registered with the authorities and do not follow national education policy. Sri Lanka has about 22 million people of which 9% are Muslims.
