Total confirmed in a press release that considering the evolution of the security situation in the north of the Cabo Delgado province in Mozambique, the French energy giant will withdraw all of its LNG project personnel from the Afungi site, after declaring force majeure. Total's decision to suspend its operations on a multi-billion liquified natural gas project has followed the ongoing violence in the area caused by Al Shabaab's terrorist insurgency in the northern province of Mozambique.

Many locals and foreign workers were murdered in the four-day attack and occupation of the town.

According to the United Nations, the insurgency, which began in 2017, has left more than 700k Mozambicans displaced.
