The grand event of the Games in Tokyo ends today: What you need to know


The Olympic flag was passed to Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo for the 2024 Games at the Tokyo closing ceremony on Sunday.


The closing ceremony for the Tokyo 2020 Games began in a nearly empty Olympic Stadium, at the end of a 16-day event held under strict anti-coronavirus conditions.

The festivities began in front of VIPs after the Japanese flag was raised at the 68,000 seat venue, where fans are barred to prevent infections.


About 11,000 athletes from all over the world competed in Olympic games. Out of 205 nations, plus the Refugee Olympic team, 93 countries managed to get on the podium at Tokyo Games.


IOC President Thoman Bach said," I declare the Games of the 32nd Olympiad closed. In accordance with tradition, I call upon the youth of the world to assemble in Paris, France in three years' time to celebrate the Games of the 33rd Olympiad."


Slowly the Olympic flame is extinguished in Tokyo stadium, and it is followed by fireworks over the stadium.
