Vitaly Shishov, head of Belarusian exile group, found dead in Ukraine
A Belarusian activist Vitaly Shishov was found hanged in a park near his home in Kyiv early on Tuesday.
He was head of a Kyiv-based organization that helps Bearusians fleeing persecution. He was reported missing by his partner on Monday after failing to return home from a run.His mobile phone and personal belongings were removed from the scene.
Police is investigating whether attackers had tried to disguise the killing as suicide. A criminal case has been filed.
Yuri Shchuchko, a friend of Shishov, who helped police indentifying the body, said Shishov’s nose had been broken.
Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania have become havens for Belarusians during a crackdown by President Alexander Lukashenko following a disputed election last year.
One exiled opposition figure Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya said on Twitter “ It is worrying that those who flee Belarus still can’t be safe”.
A fellow who has knows Shishov told that Shishov knew he was under surveillance.
