What happened to Sarah Everard?: What you need to know
There is a growing protest across the UK regarding the kidnapping and murder of 33-year-old Sarah Everard. Here is everything you need to know:
On March 3rd, Sarah was heading home to Brixton from Clapham around 9 pm, when she was last seen.
Her boyfriend filed a missing person complaint the next day as she did not reach home.
There was a city-wide search organized by London’s Metropolitan Police in response to the report.
On March 9th, police arrested a 48 yr old police constable, Wayne Couzens on suspicion of kidnapping and a woman in her 30s on suspicion of helping him.
On March 10th, police recovered the bodily remains of a girl in Kent. On March 12th, it was confirmed that the remains belonged to Sarah. She was found 50 miles from where she was last seen.
On Match 12th, Couzens was charged with kidnapping and murder of Sarah and on March 16th, he will be appearing before Central Criminal Court.
People across the UK are protesting regarding the concerns for women's safety. It is estimated that 97% of women in the UK have faced some kind of harassment.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said, “I will do everything I can to make sure the streets are safe and ensure women and girls do not face harassment or abuse.”
Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge also visited a protest site in London to show her support.
